Compact storage system creates space at Alexander Bürkle

Alexander Bürkle supplies electrotechnical products to customers within electrical trade, industry and mechanical engineering as well as to specialist traders. Their stock range includes around 45,000 items.
In order to replace existing manual picking processes and to create capacities for future growth, the existing buildings in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) were expanded to include a new building with an integrated AutoStore system. The intralogistics expert Element Logic has been commissioned to connect an AutoStore system to the existing systems. The AutoStore system is able to accommodate approx. 45,000 storage bins on an area of just 800 m².

The small parts previously stored in shelving racks have been moved into the AutoStore system, before the shelving racks were dismantled. The freed-up space has been used to create additional ramps and dispatch areas. The expansion and conversion works were carried out during ongoing operations.

The AutoStore system initially comprises a total of 21 robots, 45,000 storage bins, 4 conveyor ports for putaway and 5 carousel ports for order picking. The modular design of AutoStore allows expansions at any time during operation.

By installing the picking workstations on an intermediate level, free areas have been created on the floor. The AutoStore robots transport the storage bins from the putaway workstations on the ground floor directly into the system. Order totes are automatically provided at the workstations for order picking via conveyor technology, before they are transported further.

“With Element Logic we have found a reliable partner with many years of experience in the planning and implementation of AutoStore systems. We were also impressed by their service portfolio for ensuring high system availability. Only an AutoStore solution made it possible for us to achieve the desired storage capacity on the available space”, says Simon Straub, Managing Director at Alexander Bürkle.
